Advice and Tips for Getting Good Skin Through Proper Nutrition

It has long been said you are what you eat. This is easily reflected in the appearance of your skin. Nutrition and great skin are definitely related and some vitamins are essential for good skin. Here are some of the most important ones to incorporate into your diet through the foods you eat or the supplements you take.

  • Biotin forms the basis of all skin cells and therefore is key to maintaining healthy skin. It is necessary for an enzyme that assembles the building blocks for fat production. Skin cells are dependent upon fat production because they are exposed to the environment and die quickly requiring steady replacement.
  • Lutein & Zeaxanthin help the skin filter damaging blue light emitted from electronics and energy-efficient lightbulbs and overall help with skin elasticity and hydration.
  • Lycopene from tomato paste and sauce, ketchup and other forms of cooked tomatoes are good food sources of lycopene. In healthy people, a small study found that lycopene-rich tomato paste provided some protection against UV-induced photo-damage. In another small study, lycopene, in combination with other carotenoids, protected skin from ultraviolet (UV) skin damage from sun exposure.
  • Polypodium Leucotomos also called “anapsos”, and an extract of a fern from South America has been used for the treatment of psoriasis since the 1970s. Polypodium leucotomos may also help to prevent sunburn and skin aging caused by sun damage.
  • Selenium may provide some photo-protection against sunburn according to preliminary research.
  • Vitamin A serves many functions in relation to skin health. If your skin is dry you may be low in Vitamin A. It can also help with acne and psoriasis as well as being a great anti-aging nutrient.
  • Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps battle aging by stimulating the production of collagen. Collagen is the protein responsible for making your skin supple.
  • Vitamin E is an antioxidant which helps fight free radicals. Free radicals are one of the major causes of premature aging and are influenced by smoking, air pollution and sun exposure.
  • Other Helpers like zinc can prevent skin sagging, while magnesium and copper help oxygen flow which encourages regeneration.
