Why Everyone Can Benefit from Regular Low-Impact Water Aerobics

This summer, make your pool time full of fun and fitness. Water aerobics is a great workout option for those looking to cool down.

Nancy Fried, a Cooper Fitness Center Dallas Group Exercise Instructor has been teaching water aerobics for more than 30 years. Not only is it a great workout, but it’s a great outdoor exercise option for those hot summer months. Nancy discusses the benefits of starting a water aerobics routine.

The Physical Benefits
Typically, water aerobics exercises are practiced in shallow water and increase the heart rate, helping to tone muscle and burn calories.

Muscle toning and strength training is an important component to any workout routine. In the water, you’re able to do this with less impact on joints. Just as you would in the gym, water aerobics allows you to utilize specific equipment to help with strength training. At Cooper Fitness Center Dallas, participants use AquaBells, or dumbbells, made of foam that create resistance in the water.

Not only does water aerobics increase muscle toning, your heart will benefit as well.

Moves to Try
There are many fitness moves you may do in the water. Next time you’re in the pool, try these moves for extra exercise:

  1. Jumping Jacks – Start with hands out to a T and feet shoulder-width apart with knees slightly bent. Jump feet together and arms by sides. Repeat. Watch this exercise move here.

  2. Bicep Curls – Hold the AquaBell, or dumbbell, with one hand with your palm facing up. Your elbow is close to your side. Slowly curl your arm up by bending at the elbow and keeping your wrist straight to just under the surface of the water. Press your arm back down to your leg until your arm is almost straight.

  3. Abdominal Crunches – Suspended in the water with a noodle around your back and under your arms. Draw your knees up toward your chest, sliding your shins just under the water's surface. Drop your gluteals, and with flexed feet push back out in front of you into a supine position. Repeat for two sets of eight.

Anyone Can Participate
Water aerobics is the perfect fitness solution for anyone. Kids, adults and the elderly can all enjoy water aerobics as it blasts fat and burns calories with no sweating. That sounds like the perfect summer workout!

Sater aerobics is also a great option for those who suffer from arthritis or joint pain. The buoyancy of water lessens the pull of gravity. This makes you feel lighter and reduces impact on joints. Even those who suffer from knee and hip problems or have had hip replacements will get a great workout in the water without the pain.

Also, water aerobics classes are a good fitness alternative for pregnant women. The workout is low-impact and reduces the stress on joints already feeling the everyday pain.
