A Female-Focused Fitness Program with Women's Needs in Mind

Eight years ago, Cooper Fitness Center Professional Fitness Trainer, Colette Cole, developed Female Focus—small group fitness program designed specifically to tackle the unique fitness and health-related issues women face.

After publishing The Women’s Health and Fitness Guide on properly training women facing issues such as osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, menopause, pregnancy (and much more), Cole, who is in her 20th year at Cooper Fitness Center, recognized the need not only for a book on the topic, but for a fitness program uniquely designed for the female body.

Female Focus is a six-week, small group strength-training program. Each session is designed around a woman’s individual needs and goals. “Every woman joins our program for a different reason, so we design a fitness solution to help each woman meet her personal goals” said Cole.

The program for women of all ages and fitness levels focuses on exercise and nutrition. Cooper Clinic Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Meridan Zerner meets with each woman individually and provides the women with weekly nutritional information.

Female Focus offers women three different programs to choose from:

  1. Weight Loss. Helping women lose weight healthfully through exercise, nutrition guidance and encouragement from other women who are striving for similar goals.
  2. Disease Management. With individualized attention on health issues such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis/fibromyalgia, this group helps women learn how to manage their health and achieve their goals.
  3. Pre and Post-Natal Health. For a woman and her baby, it's important to make health a priority. Women in this program learn how to exercise safely while improving your core strength and flexibility and relieving stress.

“Female Focus is a great program for women who not only want to know if they’re doing the right fitness program for them in their stage of life, but also for their specific issues, such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, fibromyalgia, and pregnancy,” said Cole. “It’s the perfect way for women to learn, and encouraging for women dealing with specific health issues to know there is a program designed for them.”

Women participating in the program gain accountability from their trainer and other women in their group and often build lasting friendships with other women.

New Female Focus groups start every two weeks, with afternoon and sessions available. A temporary Cooper Fitness Center membership is included with registration in the program, and women who choose to join Cooper Fitness Center at the end of the six-week program will have their initiation fee waived.
