Being Fit Matters

Just as blood pressure, cholesterol and other biometric markers assess an individual’s health, measuring cardiovascular fitness is essential and critical to preventing, diagnosing and treating disease.

The science is clear—fitness is a vital sign™. Research shows being fit benefits the quality and quantity of life:

  • Decreased risk of dying from all causes*
  • Decreased risk of chronic disease such as heart disease and cancer*
  • Decreased risk of dementia* and later-life depression*
  • Decreased Medicare expenditure*

CooperFit™ Cardiovascular Fitness Test

CooperFit cardiovascular fitness test

Based on more than 50 years of evaluation and fitness testing at Cooper Clinic, CooperFit cardiovascular fitness test is an effective way to reliably and consistently measure your level of fitness.

How It Works

Conducted on a treadmill, the CooperFit test consists of a:

  • One-mile walk
  • 12-minute run

You and your CooperFit tech will determine which is best for you. Regardless, it's important to give your maximum effort during the test, walking or running as hard and fast as you can. A heart rate monitor is provided for the test.

Your Level of Fitness Result

Your CooperFit tech monitors your performance and measures your predicted max VO2—the body's ability to consume oxygen (aerobic capacity). Your performance result places you into one of six categories of fitness (below) and percentile ranking from 1% to 100% specific to your gender and age.

Levels of fitness

Your Plan for Improvement

Upon completing the CooperFit test, you receive a coaching session to review your fitness results and, as necessary, an individualized, Cooper-developed walking program.

Small changes can have big results. Research from The Cooper Institute shows simply moving from the Very Poor to Poor level of fitness decreases the risk of dying from all causes by 58%.

“Measuring your fitness as a vital sign with CooperFit can add years to your life while adding life to your years.”
