Cooper Fitness Center
Cooper Fitness Center, a 40,000-square-foot health facility located in North Dallas, is one of the eight entities of Dr. Kenneth Cooper's Aerobics Center. The Cooper Fitness Center internship program seeks students enrolled in a health-related field with a working knowledge of exercise physiology and a desire to provide excellence in customer service. Fall and spring internships are 12-week programs and summer internships are 10-week programs.
Qualifications
- Upperclassman with a 3.0 GPA or above, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate health-related program
- Personal or phone interview required
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
Internship Sessions
Spring Semester—Beginning Jan. 16, 2012 (Applications due September 30, 2011)
Summer Semester—Beginning May 28, 2012 (Applications due March 16, 2012)
Fall Semester—Beginning Sept. 24, 2012 (Applications due June 15, 2012)

Intern Responsibilities
- Fitness Floor Supervision—Provide assistance to members/guests with Power Plate Vibration Training exercises, resistance training technique and fitness related questions/concerns; Teach Core Conditioning Classes; Maintain fitness floor cleanliness and order.
- Program Planning—Learn how to effectively market a fitness facility program; Aid in the planning and promotion of Fitness Center programs/events that improve cardiovascular conditioning, body composition or community/charitable involvement.
- Personal Fitness Assessments—Learn how to perform the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and associated corrective exercises; Observe the Cooper Fitness Center New Member Orientation process; Develop ability to design resistance training programs on FMS outcomes.
- Professional Sport Trainers—Observe/assist professional staff as they help teach and improve skill, technique and performance in basketball, tennis, boxing, running, swimming and/or martial arts.
- Senior Programs—Aid in the planning and promotion of senior programs that promote community, fitness and wellness; Assist in/observe senior group exercise classes.
- Youth Programs—Assist in/observe group exercise classes designed for children and youth; Summer interns will aid in the planning and facilitation of camps for children and youth by organizing games and educational lectures that encourage fitness and proper nutrition.
- Personal Training—Shadow personal training sessions; Learn new exercise techniques and program design; “Train the trainer” opportunities; Attend monthly personal trainer staff meetings and various continuing education workshops.
- Campus-wide Activities—Interns are required to spend time observing at Cooper Clinic, Cooper Wellness lifestyle program, and The Cooper Institute (dependent on research study availability); Assist in planning and implementation of special Cooper Fitness Center member events (Member Appreciation Party, Member Social Events, Eggstravaganza, etc.).
- Special Project—Special projects for university course requirements or special interests are supported, encouraged and accommodated.
Evaluation
Evaluation of work performance shall be made in an objective manner by the intern coordinator. It will be based upon successful completion of responsibilities and projects. A daily schedule will be assigned to meet individuals' school requirements.
Compensation
A performance-based stipend is awarded throughout the semester, and other opportunities to a part-time hourly wage exist. Participation in one Cooper Institute certification course is granted (intern responsible for paying for course materials). Though housing is not provided, we will gladly assist you in finding accommodations.

Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch opened spring 2006 in McKinney, Texas. The Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch internship program seeks college students enrolled in a health-related degree program with a working knowledge of exercise physiology and a desire to provide excellence in customer service. Fall and spring internships are 12-week programs and summer internships are 10-week programs.
Qualifications
- Juniors, Seniors, and above with a 3.0 GPA or higher, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate health-related program
- Personal or phone interview required
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
Internship Sessions
Spring Semester—Beginning Jan. 10, 2011 (Applications due Nov. 12, 2010)
Summer Semester—Beginning May 23, 2011 (Applications due April 1, 2011)

Intern Responsibilities
- Fitness Floor Supervision—Provide weight-training orientations and exercise supervision and instruction, and answer fitness-related questions
- Program Planning—Aid in planning and promoting Cooper Aerobics Center at Craig Ranch events, and learn how to effectively market a fitness program
- Special Project—To be determined by internship coordinator
- Personal Fitness Assessments—Observe and learn how to give functional assessments; how to design a program based on a functional assessment; and participate in new member orientations
- Recreation Leagues—Aid in the planning and implementation of recreation leagues and implementation of recreation programs
- Youth Programs—Aid in the planning of summer camps and programs; summer interns are required to participate as counselors for the camps
- Personal Training—Shadow personal training sessions; learn new exercise techniques and program design; be mentored by a personal trainer; and attend monthly continuing education programs
- Campus-wide Activities—Observe at other Cooper Aerobics Center facilities and departments, including Cooper Fitness Center at the original Dallas campus; Visit a corporate wellness site managed by Cooper Corporate Solutions
- Customer Service—Observe and practice customer service in every Cooper Aerobics Center at Craig Ranch department in which they assist

Internship - Corporate Wellness

Cooper Corporate Solutions
Cooper Corporate Solutions, one of 10 divisions of Dr. Kenneth Cooper's Aerobics Center in Dallas, provides consulting and management services for corporate wellness and health facilities. Internship locations include Austin and Dallas, Texas; Atlanta, Ga.; Durant, Okla.; and other U.S. cities.
Internship Objectives
The Cooper Corporate Solutions fitness/health promotion internships provide student interns an opportunity to apply educational and technical experience in their specific fields. During the 12 to 15 week internship, interns will gain 400-plus hours of hands-on experience working with a fitness and/or wellness program.
Internship Sessions
Spring Semester—Beginning in January (Applications due October 1)
Summer Semester—Beginning in May or June (Applications due March 1)
Fall Semester—Beginning in September (Applications due June 15)
Requirements
Interns are required to have completed the majority of undergraduate or graduate work in a health-related field and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Interns will work at one main site and will have the opportunity to visit other Cooper Corporate Solutions sites and Cooper Aerobics Center's Dallas and McKinney locations. The completion of one major site-specific project is required. Additional responsibilities include assisting with the coverage and day-to-day operations of the fitness center (if applicable); conducting assessments and health screenings; and planning, marketing, and implementing wellness programs. Current first aid and CPR certifications are required.
Compensation and Housing
Interns are compensated for their work 20-40 hours per week. Hours vary by location. Participation in one on-site Cooper Institute certification program is granted (intern is responsible for payment of course materials). Though housing is not provided, we will assist in finding you accommodations.
