The Cooper Institute Names $1-Million Endowed Chair Honors Longtime Institute Supporters
DALLAS — The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees at The Cooper Institute is pleased to announce that a $1 million endowed chair has been named for Dallas residents, Barbara and Fred Meyer.
The endowed chair, "The Fred and Barbara Meyer Chair in Preventive Medicine," will be awarded to Steven N. Blair, P.E.D., president and CEO of The Cooper Institute. The funding for this chair, donated by the Meyers and other longtime contributors to The Cooper Institute will directly support future research studies that look at the role physical activity has on the prevention of disease.
Fred and Barbara Meyer have been supporters of The Cooper Institute since its founding in 1970. Fred Meyer serves as vice chairman of the Board of Trustees and has been on the board since the founding. "Barbara and I are committed to the Institute and its vital, science-based research and education initiatives," said Meyer. "It is important to us that the next generation and their children have the benefit of the Institute's research, which enhances quality of life and longevity."
Blair has worked at The Cooper Institute for 26 years. He has written more than 350 book chapters and scientific articles, and received numerous honors from scientific associations, including a MERIT award from the National Institute on Aging.
"I am grateful to Fred and Barbara for their support and generosity," Blair said. "This endowed chair will help us build on our research foundation and pursue new studies in the exercise and preventive health fields."
