Program to Provide Guidance to Diabetics and Their Caregivers
Cooper Wellness Program to Focus on Diabetes in September

DALLAS — There are currently 17 million people with diabetes in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2000) and more and more children are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. To provide assistance to diagnosed diabetics, the individuals responsible for their care, and those at risk for developing diabetes, Cooper Wellness Program is offering four, six or 13-day programs September 7-13 and September 14-20.

In addition to the dietary, fitness and stress management programming included in each standard Wellness Program, the diabetes program will include: gourmet meals prepared with consideration of the glycemic index and the diabetic exchange program; a variety of exercise classes; and support from fitness, exercise and medical experts with testimonials about living with diabetes.

A clinical trial conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that people with a high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes could reduce their risk through healthy lifestyle changes by 58 percent, while a known prescription drug only reduced it by 31 percent. "If there is one thing that holds true for diabetes management, it is a consistent exercise program," said Rich Little, vice president of Cooper Ventures and one of the presenters for the Cooper Wellness Program diabetes session. "As a diabetic, I try to work out most days of the week and find with this consistency, I can control my glucose far more effectively. I feel better, I have more energy, my stress level is kept down and I know that I'm taking steps to combat long-term difficulties prevalent in many diabetics."

Even individuals who are 20 pounds overweight could benefit from this program says Connie Tyne, executive director of Cooper Wellness Program. "One of the key concerns for anyone who is overweight is diabetes. We hope that by providing people who have yet to develop diabetes with a safe and realistic weight loss program, we can reduce their risk," said Tyne.

Cooper Wellness Program ranges in price from $2,295 to $4,295. Hotel accommodations and a Cooper Clinic comprehensive examination can be added for an additional charge.
