CT Colonography |
|
What is CT Colonography? CT Colonography is an imaging procedure that allows a doctor to view the large bowel (colon). The primary purpose is to detect polyps, small growths in the colon that may become cancerous if they are not removed, and, of course, cancerous growths should they already exist.
What is the recommended age to have the procedure done? The procedure is recommended for most patients, male or female, at age 50. A physician may recommend the exam at a younger age if the patient has a family history of colon cancer.
How often would a patient need to have colorectal screening? Cooper Clinic recommends colorectal screening by flexible sigmoidoscopy every three years for patients over 40. Patients over 50 should be tested every three years, alternating a flexible sigmoidoscopic exam with a barium enema X-ray, conventional colonoscopy, or CT Colonography unless otherwise instructed by his or her physician.
Is advance preparation required for the test? There is a two-day preparation process that a radiology technologist will go over in detail with the patient. Written instructions will also be given to the patient.
How will the patient receive the preparation kit? The patient must pick up the kit at least four days prior to the scheduled exam. If the patient lives out of town, the prep kit can be mailed in advance.
What does the CT Colonography entail? Sedation is not needed. The patient will lie on a table while a radiologist inserts a small rubber tube into the rectum so air can be introduced. Then, two scans of the abdomen will be performed. The patient will then be allowed to use the restroom.
How long does the procedure last? Approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Will there be any pain? The patient may experience minimal temporary abdominal cramping or "gas pains" from the air that is introduced.
What is the cost? The total cost is $895*. Patients pay $45 when they pick up their prep kits and $850 the day of the exam.
Will insurance cover the procedure? Most insurance companies do not currently reimburse patients for CT Colonography.
Does the patient need a prescription from his or her physician? Yes. The patient must bring a prescription from his or her primary care physician, which should read "CT Colonography."
Can a patient schedule a CT Colonography for the same day as his or her Cooper Clinic comprehensive exam? No. For the prep, the patient must drink barium, which could prohibit him or her from having several of the physical exam procedures. The CT Colonography should be scheduled on a separate day.
Will the patient get the results the same day as the scan? The radiologist needs adequate time to thoroughly read this type of scan. However, the patient will receive a brief review of the images after exam is completed. The patient and his or her physician will receive a copy of the report in the mail about one week after the exam.
What will happen if something is found? If a significant abnormality is found, there are resources available through Cooper Clinic to follow up that same day or the following day to avoid repeating the bowel preparation.
