A Message from Dr. Cooper
|
According to Prevention magazine, at least two thirds of Americans feel
stressed at least once a week. That was before September 11. I am confident
that statistic is much higher now due to the developments both here and abroad.
In this issue of The Wellness Insider, we bring you several articles to give
you tools to get a handle on your stress levels.
Stress can be both positive and negative. Without at least some stress, life
would be quite boring. Hans Selye, the late stress researcher, once asked,
"What would life be with no runs, no hits, and no errors?" The body needs at
least some stress in order to remain sharp and alert. However, bad stress can
be devastating and even deadly.

Fighting Food Cues - Ways to Win the
Battle
Patty Kirk, R.D., L.D.
Is it hard to walk past the cookie jar in your kitchen without grabbing a
cookie or two? Can you resist the candy in a dish on your coffee table? These
questions are examples of how you can identify Food Cues that trigger eating,
even when hunger is not present. Food cues can include billboards, aromas, the
popcorn line at the movies, donuts in the break room, vending machines, samples
at the grocery store and commercials on television.

Vitamin Supplementation

Stressing the Benefits of Vitamins
Angela Marks, Cooper
Concepts, Inc.
We all have had to deal with similar scenarios: the terrible traffic on the way
to an important meeting, the dog eating the report that took you so long to
prepare, the flat tire that kept you from attending a friend's wedding, the
homecoming parade and party that you have to coordinate. Life certainly would
not be the same without some level of emotional stress! Although people deal
with stress a little differently depending on personality and lifestyle, there
are some important things to remember about how prolonged stress effects our
health and how good nutrition and vitamin supplementation can serve as our
defense.

Gearing Up Physically
Jill Armayor, Cooper
Ventures
On September 11 our lives changed forever. The events of that date will remain
vivid in our memories and will forever be described as one of the most
devastating and harrowing tragedies in the history of mankind. It has been
generations since Americans have had to grasp the fact that war has taken place
on their own soil. With a depressed economy, casualties of innocent civilians,
and the ever-present threat that our freedom and security might be in jeopardy,
there is not one American who isn't being affected in some way. While it is
important to prepare ourselves mentally, we cannot forget the importance up
gearing up physically.

Managing Stress for a Healthy Heart
Brought to you
exclusively from the women physicians at Cooper Clinic
If you are like most women, you juggle many roles at once-mother, wife,
daughter, employee, boss, community volunteer, chauffeur, cook, and social
director. The list of responsibilities can be overwhelming; it is no surprise
that many feel frazzled about the task of keeping all these balls in the air.
The bad news is that stress not only affects us emotionally, but can be taxing
on the cardiovascular system as well!
