Cooper Clinic Dermatology Says Beat Skin Cancer with Prevention;
Airbrush Tanning Is Safe Alternative to Sun's Harmful Effects
DALLAS (May 26, 2009) – Starting today, Cooper Spa offers St. Tropez airbrush tanning as a safe and attractive alternative to harmful sun exposure. The new service is just in time for summer and complements Cooper Clinic’s thorough preventive skin cancer screenings and corrective skin care solutions.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than one million skin cancers are detected annually in the U.S., and 68,000 new malignant melanoma—the most fatal type—are predicted for 2009. Malignant melanoma is now the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old. That’s why early detection can be life saving.
“Skin cancer is the most preventable type of cancer,” says Adean Kingston, M.D., a board certified dermatologist at Cooper Clinic. “If you use good daily sun precautions and avoid sunbathing, tanning beds, and sunburns while vacationing, you can largely prevent skin cancer.”
The golden tan that people love is actually an injury response to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) damage. The intense sun exposure—especially in Texas—dramatically increases a person’s risk of skin cancer.
To achieve a sun-kissed look without subjecting your skin to damaging UV rays, Cooper Spa in Dallas now offers St. Tropez airbrush tanning. Applied by a trained and experienced technician, St. Tropez airbrush tanning provides clients with an even, natural looking tan. The product is aloe vera based and soothing on the skin.
“Airbrush tanning is the best of both worlds,” says Shannan Gulbis, Cooper Spa director, “you get gorgeous skin color without the harmful effects. This provides clients options to enhance their beauty in a safe and easy way.”
One treatment takes about 45 minutes, costs $50, and lasts up to one week. Half body applications, exfoliation treatments, and packages are also available.
Dr. Kingston advises people to check their skin regularly for any new or changing lesions and to have an annual full body skin exam. A meticulous head-to-toe skin exam is the best way to catch skin cancer early and at its most treatable stage.
Medical research points to lifestyle issues as the primary cause for skin cancer. Yet, people can reduce their risk of skin cancer with these simple steps:
- Properly apply the new broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreens at SPF 45-85.
- Avoid tanning beds. Their deeper penetrating UVA light is greatly responsible for the increased incidence of melanoma in young adults and causes photo-aging as demonstrated by wrinkles, poor complexion and skin texture, brown spots, and redness from broken blood vessels.
- Get a yearly thorough skin examination.
If significant UVR damage has already occurred, Cooper Clinic Dermatology also offers corrective procedures available to regain healthier luminous skin. Procedures available include FotoFacials, photodynamic therapy, Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser therapy, and home application of research-based antioxidant lotions.
