2015 Marks The Cooper Institute’s 45th Year of Promoting Health & Wellness Worldwide

DALLAS – January 8, 2015 – The Cooper Institute, the global leader in health research and education, names Amy Johnson as Chief Development Officer. Johnson will play a key role in achieving fundraising objectives, strategic planning and campaign tactics for the The Cooper Institute’s adult education, youth education and research programs.  The Cooper Institute, pioneered by the "father of aerobics," Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH, celebrates 45 years of health and wellness in 2015 with a commemorative event on November 5, 2015. Johnson previously served as Vice President of Strategic Development with the American Heart Association (AHA).

"Amy brings a wealth of philanthropic expertise and strong community ties to The Cooper Institute, and we believe that her development experience will provide us an excellent opportunity for strategic growth," said Laura DeFina, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Cooper Institute. "We are confident that with Amy’s direction, we can extend our reach locally and internationally in youth initiatives (Fitnessgram), adult education programs (Cooper Certified Training) and research."

With extensive non-profit experience, Johnson led the AHA Dallas Heart Walk fundraising efforts from $875,000 in 2003 to $5.6M in 2014. She has a long-standing history of work with The Cooper Institute alongside Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper and Dr. Tyler Cooper. Prior to joining the American Heart Association she worked in fundraising and development for March of Dimes.

“Having worked closely with Amy as the Dallas Heart Walk Chairman, I’ve seen firsthand the leadership and collaboration she brings to non-profit development,” says Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH. “Amy will be instrumental in supporting our 45 years of scientific data collected in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study (CCLS)—which is the largest database of its kind—to continue leading research in the health and fitness community.”

Actively involved in the non-profit community, Johnson served on AHA National Task Forces including:  Healthy Behavior Platform, Go Red for Women, Mission and Revenue Initiative for Smaller Communities, Online Fundraising, Sodium Reduction and Corporate Strategic Planning.  Johnson is a graduate of 2012-2013-Leadership North Texas, and Dan S. Petty, Servant Leadership Scholarship recipient.  Johnson received her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Christian University.
