NEW THIS YEAR - Splash Camp
For Kids Camp attendees (ages 5-7), we're offering a special session of Swim Academy for an additional $100 (added to camp registration fee). You must register for Splash Camp in advance by phone at the same time you register for camp. Call 972-233-4832 ext. 6402. Camp registration begins March 1.
Class Descriptions and Group Lessons Schedule
Cooper Swim Academy group lessons are categorized by color, with each color representing a different skill level. Please read each class description below and register your child for the appropriate level.

BABY BLUE CLASS (Parent and Child)
Child must be at least 1 year old as of June 1, 2010
This class introduces basic water and pool safety to the parent and child and focuses on helping the child become comfortable in the water. Blowing bubbles, jumping, floating, and getting out of the pool are also taught. The goal of the class is to prepare the child for future lessons.
WHITE CLASS
3 years old (as of June 1, 2010)
This class is for 3-year-olds only. Little or no previous instruction. This class will introduce basic water skills such as blowing bubbles, submerging, floating, gliding, and moving through the water. Emphasis of class is becoming more comfortable in the water.
RED CLASS
At least 4 years old (as of Sept. 1, 2010)
The child will have little or no previous instruction. This class includes introduction to floating, gliding, and using the arms to move through the water. The emphasis is on becoming more comfortable in the water. Children already comfortable under water might consider the Orange Class.
ORANGE CLASS
Typical age is 4 to 6 years
The child must have little or no fear of the water and be able to swim five to 10 feet to an instructor. Class emphasis is on freestyle arms, front and back float, breathing techniques, kicking, and ease and comfort in the water.
YELLOW CLASS
Typical age is 4 to 7 years
The child must have no fear of the water and be able to swim 30 to 50 feet. The class emphasis is on proper freestyle mechanics in coordination with balance and breathing. This class is a must for breathing fundamentals. Backstroke and kneeling racing start from the side of the pool are introduced.
GREEN CLASS
Typical age is 6 to 8 years
The child must be completely at ease in any depth of water and be able to swim 50 feet freestyle. This class emphasizes increased distance in freestyle while maintaining proper stroke mechanics and breathing to the side. Backstroke and racing start are also taught.
BLUE CLASS
Typical age is 7 to 12 years
The child must be completely at ease in any depth of water and be able to swim 50 feet freestyle. Class emphasis is on increased distance in freestyle while maintaining proper stroke mechanics and breathing to the side. Backstroke and racing start techniques are also taught. This class is for stronger swimmers who have had previous instruction and will be able to swim 50 feet repeatedly for 30 to 45 minutes.
VIOLET CLASS
Typical age is 7 to 12 years
The child can comfortably swim 50 feet freestyle while correctly and consistently breathing to the side. Proficient in backstroke. Class emphasis is on advanced efficiency in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and racing starts. Butterfly and elementary backstroke may be introduced. This class is for stronger swimmers who have had previous instruction and will be able to swim 50 feet repeatedly, using proper technique, for 30 to 45 minutes.
BLACK/VIOLET CLASS
Typical age is 8 to 13 years
Child must have successfully completed the VIOLET class or show ample skills as such. This special interest class focuses on competitive aspects of the four strokes, starts, and turns.
Things to know before you arrive at Cooper Swim Academy
Lessons are held in the Cooper Guest Lodge pool, and seating for parents is available at the west end of the pool. Please:
- Make sure your child arrives 10 minutes prior to the start of the class.
- Have your child use the restroom just before coming to class.
- Remember to have your child wear sunscreen.
