20 Questions
Ask a Question
Q:

Since you recommend taking Basic One with a meal to get the fats, will taking it with Omega 3s satisfy that requirement?

A:

Fat-soluble vitamins are likely to be better absorbed if taken with a meal that contains fat. Fish oil may help a little, but not much.  Our advanced Omega 3 has 2.5 gms of fat.  Studies have shown increased absorption of fat-soluble vitamins when taken with meals containing 15 gms or more.

Q:

Is Centrum about the same as Basic One for its ingredients?

A:

While many of the nutrients are the same, there are some significant differences; including Basic One containing twice the amount of all-important Vitamin D. We have an article comparing Centrum to Cooper Complete Basic One.  To explore the differences read this article: https://coopercomplete.com/blog/multivitamin-compare-find-best-multivitamin/

Q:

How is Basic One Daily Multivitamin Iron Free different from Original Multivitamin Iron Free?

A:

Basic One Daily Multivitamin is Cooper Clinic’s baseline recommendation for optimal health. This side-by-side comparison of the multivitamin and mineral formulations provides an easy-to-read snapshot of Basic One Daily Multivitamin against Cooper Complete Original Comprehensive Multivitamin, which also includes coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for heart health, lutein and zeaxanthin for skin and eye health, biotin for hair and nails, and higher levels of vitamins A, C, and K, the B vitamins thiamin and riboflavin and magnesium.

The serving size for Basic One Daily Multivitamin is one (1) tablet per day, while Original Comprehensive Multivitamin is eight (8) tablets per day (ideally, four (4) with breakfast and four (4) with dinner).

Q:

Where is this vitamin made?

A:

The Basic One Iron Free is produced in a GMP-certified facility in Florida.

Q:

Does Basic One have potassium?

A:

Basic One multivitamin does not contain potassium. Original Multivitamins (Iron and Iron-Free) contain 400 mg of potassium per serving if you need a multivitamin with potassium.

Q:

Is that high a dose of vitamin E safe?

A:

All of our vitamin and supplement doses are based on scientific research. Three national surveys -the 2001–2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES),  NHANES III (1988–1994), and the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (1994–1996) -have found that the diets of most Americans provide less than the RDA levels of vitamin E. The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine has set an upper tolerable intake level for vitamin E at 1000 mg (1500 IU) per day for supplemental vitamin E. The amount of vitamin E in Cooper Complete Basic One is 134 mg (200 IU), which falls well within the upper limits established by the Food and Nutrition Board.

Q:

Is the B6 level safe at 10 mg?
Can this multi vitamin be taken with your B Complex vitamin and still stay in a safe limit of B6?

A:

The NIH lists the upper limit of B6 as 100 mg for adults. This includes intake from food sources and supplements. Therefore, the levels of B6 found in the Basic One are safe. The Cooper Complete multivitamin is high in B vitamins. We recommend taking either a multivitamin or B Complex.

Q:

Is the Basic One dairy and egg free?

A:

The Basic One is tested for the 8 major allergens. If an allergen is in the product, it is listed in bold under the supplement facts portion of the label.

Basic One does not contain any of the 8 allergens listed below:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Crustacean/shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy
Q:

How does Basic One impact C-reactive protein (CRP)?

A:

C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation found in the blood, increasing when there’s inflammation in the body. Your physician may order this blood test as part of your annual exam. Basic One has been found to lower C-Reactive Protein by 13 percent†.

Q:

Can I take this product if I am also taking Coumadin or Warfarin?

A:

Vitamin K is known to impact blood clotting and is not included in Basic One Daily Multivitamin. Please talk with your doctor or INR Clinic before adding this supplement to your diet.

Q:

Can I cut or crush the tablets to make them smaller?

A:

Yes. It is safe to crush or cut the tablets.

Q:

Has the pill color changed?

A:

Yes, the pill color is now cream-colored with speckles. We made the change to have a cleaner label. The pill color is the only change we have made, as the vitamins and minerals remain the same.

Q:

Why isn’t calcium in the Basic One Daily Multivitamin?

A:

Calcium requirements vary by age and gender so a “one size fits all” isn’t optimal. Cooper Clinic physicians encourage patients to consume calcium through food rather than supplementation. We recommend calcium citrate if you need more calcium than what’s consumed in your normal daily diet.

Q:

What is folic acid as Metafolin®, L-5-MTHF?

A:

Metafolin® is a brand name for a patented form of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) made by Merck. Almost 45 percent of the U.S. population has a mutation in one of the enzymes involved in folic acid metabolism. 5-MTHF circumvents this mutation and allows the body to get the supplement’s benefits.

Q:

Why is vitamin E reflected in mg (milligram) rather than IU (International Units)?

A:

The FDA changed nutrition (food) and supplement facts panels to make it easier to understand, and the International Unit (IU) measure is going away. 134 mg of vitamin E d-alpha-tocopheryl is equal to 200 mg. To convert from IU of vitamin E to mcg of vitamin E, multiply by 0.67.

Q:

What is vitamin E as d-alpha-tocopheryl succinate?

A:

D-alpha-tocopheryl succinate vitamin E is a natural (non-synthetic) form of vitamin E. Studies have shown that natural vitamin E is better absorbed and retained in the body than synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol.

Q:

I notice the folate is now shown as 333 mcg DFE (200 mcg L-5-MTHF). What does this mean?

A:

The FDA changed nutrition (food) and supplement facts panels to make them easier to understand. To convert from mcg (microgram) to Dietary Folate Equivalents (DFE), divide by 0.60. (This conversion applies to both folic acid and 5-MTHF.)

Q:

I notice vitamin A is now shown as 600 mcg (microgram) rather than 2000 IU (International Units). Why did you make this change?

A:

The FDA changed nutrition (food) and supplement facts panels to make it easier to understand, and the International Unit (IU) measure is going away. 600 mcg vitamin A is the same amount of vitamin A as 2000 IU. To convert from IU of vitamin A or beta-carotene to mcg RAE (Retinol Activity Equivalents), multiply by 0.30.

Q:

This daily multivitamin contains 50 mcg of vitamin D and I’ve been told I need 2000 IU. Why did you make this change?

A:

The FDA changed nutrition (food) and supplement facts panels to make it easier to understand, and the International Unit (IU) measure for vitamins and supplements has been eliminated. 50 mcg vitamin D is the same amount of vitamin D as 2,000 IU. To convert from IU of vitamin D to mcg of vitamin D, multiply by 0.025.

Q:

Will the B vitamins in this daily multivitamin keep me awake?

A:

While the level of B vitamins in Basic One should not disrupt sleep, we suggest this multivitamin and mineral supplement be taken with breakfast or lunch if this is a concern.
